2nd Pilot Course for Futsal Coach Educators
2014Event
A pilot seminar for futsal educators, organised by UEFA and the Italian FA, has been held in Novara, Italy. The course provided information that the participants could use to educate futsal coaches in their country.

The event included presentations on tactics, training methods, refereeing and goalkeeping. These were provided by the UEFA Futsal Working Group which is composed of Jorge Braz (Portugal Head Coach), Javier Lozano (Former Spain Head Coach and current Spanish League President), Roberto Menichelli (Italy Head Coach), Paolo Piani (UEFA Jira Panel) and José Venancio Lopez (Spain Head Coach); and guests presenters.

There were representatives from 17 different UEFA member countries participating in the event and it was deemed a success by all involved. The education of coaches is an important part of the development of futsal and UEFA should be commend for this initiative. This is the second pilot after the first was held in the National Football Centre in Laz Rozas, Spain. There is a third course scheduled for May which will be held in Prague, Czech Republic.

The first FIFA futsal coaching sessions in Japan

The first FIFA futsal coaching sessions in Japan
26 September 2014
The first FIFA futsal coaching sessions in Japan
The FIFA futsal coaching sessions were held from Tuesday 26 August to Saturday 30 August at Lake Arena Hakone and Hotel Hakone Powell in Kanagawa. Miguel Rodrigo, the head coach of the Futsal Japan National Team, attended as a FIFA instructor and the 24 participants, who were chosen from F.LEAGUE club instructors or JFA futsal instructors, attended the lectures and practice lessons.
There were many coaches from the F.LEAGUE’s top teams and JFA futsal instructors with qualifications higher than Class B. So even though the sessions were very technical and high-level, the participants had a detailed understanding and held enthusiastic discussions everyday.
During the breaks or meals, they also shared the situations at their respective clubs and naturally started to discuss about future vision of Japanese futsal. They were literally ‘up to their neck in futsal’ for five days.

Instructor Comment

Miguel RODRIGO, FIFA instructor (Head coach of the Futsal Japan National Team)
I believe that we shared a great experience among the top-level instructors in Japan. In particular, exchanging opinions about futsal training methods and sharing our vision for the future of Japanese futsal were the most significant outcomes.
The participants have built strong bonds during these five days by living under the same roof. After finishing these sessions, I felt strongly that we needed to host similar sessions for them annually. Having meaningful experiences as an individual or as a member of a group will help to improve Japanese futsal in the future.

Comments From Participants

ITO Masanori(Vasagey Oita)
I’m grateful that I got an opportunity to learn futsal deeply. I’ve been involved in F.LEAGUE since its very first year. It’s the eighth year this year and both F.LEAGUE and Japanese futsal have improved a lot. Through these sessions I realised that we have some serious work to do in order to improve F.LEAGUE and Japanese futsal even more. I’d like to perform to the best of my ability to motivate the league and the industry, which many people have supported until now.
YONEKAWA Masao (Bardral Urayasu)
I’m honoured to have participated in the very first futsal coaching sessions in Japan. I took over as head coach of a F.LEAGUE club team this year. As someone in a position to improve Japanese futsal, at this training session I was able to establish my personal standards. I’ll not only bring what I learned back to my team, but also pass it on to as many instructors and players as possible.
ONODERA Takahiko(Espolada Hokkaido)
It was a really great opportunity that the coaching staff of F.LEAGUE gathered altogether discussing the future vision for Japanese futsal and communicated with the JFA futsal instructors, not to mention learning more about futsal. I’d like to apply what I learned in practical coaching and spread it in my region. I’m very honoured to attend such a valuable session. I appreciate that.
WAKAYAMA Shintaro(Nagoya Oceans)
I’m really grateful that I had the opportunity to participate in these sessions.
Through these five days I learned a lot with other F.LEAGUE coaches and realised again that I must make a strong contribution to improving Japanese futsal. I also feel a great responsibility. I’d like to share what I leaned with others who are involved in futsal.

Futsal coaching in good hands

Specialists from 21 top futsal nations, including coaches who led teams at UEFA Futsal EURO 2014 in Antwerp, attended a UEFA coach education pilot course in Prague.
July 2014 marks the launch date of the new UEFA 'B' level coaching licence specifically designed to offer an internationally-recognised qualification to technicians working in the five-a-side game. The futsal licence has been presented to all member associations at a series of pilot courses – and the sequence was completed when coaches and coach educators met in Prague last week.
The four-day event was attended by futsal specialists from 21 of Europe’s top nations in the futsal field, among them the coaches who, three months earlier, had led their national teams at UEFA Futsal EURO 2014 in Antwerp.
As UEFA's chief technical officer, Ioan Lupescu, explained on the opening day: "he aim of this course is to outline the key elements in this new 'B' licence course and to make it clear that UEFA is willing to offer tailor-made support to member associations who feel they would benefit from outside expertise in building up their futsal structures."
For the record, most of UEFA's member associations have announced their intention to implant the new UEFA futsal coaching courses on an immediate basis, with the rest intending to do likewise in a very near future.
"This is a big step forward," said UEFA Futsal and Beach Soccer Committee second vice-chairman Petr Fousek, who was leading the team from the Football Association of the Czech Republic (FAČR) which performed magnificently in hosting the event. "We have worked towards this for a long time, and it really opens up new spaces for the sport."
The programme for the pilot course was based on specialised topics of great interest to the coach educators who will be helping to bring the UEFA Futsal licence to life. But there was a session on the second morning that futsal fans and the media would have relished: a round-table discussion on UEFA EURO 2014 involving the coaches of the top four teams at the final tournament in Antwerp – Jorge Braz of Portugal; José Venancio López, bronze-medallist with Spain; Sergei Skorovich, runner-up with Russia; and the current European champion Roberto Menichelli, victorious with an Italian team that took the title despite losing its first game. The four coaches were interviewed by Javier Lozano, the two-time FIFA Futsal World Cup winner and three-time European champion who had been in Antwerp as UEFA’'s technical observer.
The course was otherwise divided equally between theoretical presentations and practical sessions involving players from the Czech Republic’s youth teams. The content had great specific density, based on angles such as the transfer of futsal knowledge to players; playing systems and tactical options; fast transitions; the art of playing with (or against) the flying goalkeeper; the fitness concepts applicable to the indoor game; methods of designing and managing futsal training sessions; the development and application of individual skills; and the principles of futsal goalkeeping, which evidently differ radically from the parameters of the outdoor game.
The off-the-pitch sessions featured inspirational contributions by Lozano and Venancio on the sort of teaching methodology that the futsal coach educator will need to dominate; or the tactical, man-management and leadership skills which would-be coaches will want to have in their toolboxes as they embark on a coaching career in the five-a-side game.
"This event demonstrated that UEFA is leading by example," commented Lozano on the closing day. "It was a wonderful opportunity to share knowledge. The UEFA futsal licence is a positive move and a democratic one, in the sense that it will open up the game and make it truly universal, with UEFA willing to help all national associations to continue to climb up towards the standards of the top countries."

MODERN HIGH PERFORMANCE FUTSAL TRAINING TECHNIQUES

BALL CONTROL

“Close control is fundamental to this game and to master the technique you have to train with the ball every day. A good training method is to stand in front of a wall and kick the ball against it, using different parts of the your foot and varying the power and curl you put on it. Do this with either foot. Then, when you prepare to control the ball, try to vary the part of your body you control the ball with. This will help to prepare your touch for all situations.”

SHOOTING

“A lot of players make the mistake of just shooting at the target without any thought. When I train to improve my shooting technique I make sure that when I get in front of goal, I get my head up, look where the goalkeeper is, relax and always try to hit a specific part of the goal. Visualise yourself scoring before you shoot.”

PASSING

“The two key elements to passing in small-sided football are speed and the firmness of the pass. When you’re waiting to receive the ball look around to see where the opposition is, where your team-mates are and where the open space is, so that when you get the ball you know what you’re going to do with it. This will speed up the movement and release of the ball. Then make sure your pass is firm because space is tight and defenders will be close."

COMMUNICATION

“Ideally the best talker in your team will play in defence. From this position he can see the whole game – they can tell players when to pass, when they have a man on and where to move. This helps the other players to concentrate on attacking because they are receiving instructions from a team-mate who can see everything.”

ORGANISATION

“From a defensive perspective, the less you move, the harder you will be to break down. The best way to defend in small-sided football is zonally. You use a lot of energy so don’t waste it chasing the ball into areas where the opposition can’t hurt you. Defend your zone.”

FITNESS

“There’s no better way to improve your fitness for small-sided football than playing the game. But I’d also recommend interval training: sprint hard for a few minutes, then slow the pace for a couple, and then sprint hard again. Repeat this for the same amount of time as your games last. Train as though you’re always on the move.”
