Today in Texas, Barcelona played PFL Team Mexico but yesterday the opening match of the PFL International Challenge powered by USA Futsal was between FC Barcelona Futbol Sala and PFL Team USA.
A crowd of 5,179 – the largest-ever crowd to watch futsal in the U.S. – filled the Dr. Pepper Arena as Barcelona defeated Team USA 4-3 in the first matchup of the three-game PFL International Challenge tournament featuring FC Barcelona, Team USA, and Team Mexico
FC Barcelona took the lead and ended the first half, 4-1 to Barca. Lucas Stauffer, an All-American freshman at Creighton University, was the liveliest in attack with four shots in the first half, narrowly missing a goal thanks to a tremendous save by Barcelona goalkeeper Miguel Feixas. And PFL USA goalkeeper Boris Pardo thrilled the crowd by ripping a half-court shot of his own.
The Dallas Morning News decribed the second half:
"Barcelona’s passing and Team USA’s defensive posture sedated the action for much of the second half until the U.S. subbed out goalkeeper Pardo with three minutes remaining to add a fifth attacker. The strategy paid off as Daniel Mattos scored twice in the final minute, making the score a respectable 4-3 and providing fans with a thrilling end to an exciting and well-produced night of professional futsal."
USA Futsal President Rob Andrews described the event as emotional and for everyone who has been involved in Futsal development in the states and even across the world, seeing Futsal reach a professional level in the states and the global recognition such an event will do for the sport was exactly that, emotional and exciting beyond words.
This event and the development of Futsal in the US states that Futsal is now on the big stage, that Futsal which has 16 million registered Futsal players in Iran, 4.4 million in Italy (1.1 million football players) and many more around the global is finally going to show the world that it has arrived and get the recognition that the sport deserves.
